Bad Power Steering Causes 86,000 Mini Coopers to Be Recalled

Mini Recall Overview:

In 2010 the The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration began investigating the cars after 339 complaints, twenty minor crashes and three fires were reported. The source of the complaint was melted wires. At first BMW extending the steering warranty, but now under pressure, have resorted to issue a recall on the Mini Cooper and Mini Cooper S models.The cars were manufactured and sold between 2002 and 2005.

This recall is in effect because the car may experience temporary or permanent loss of the electro-hydraulic steering assistance. If the power steering fails, the manual steering is still in place, however making it harder to steer. The cars are currently covered by a 13-year, 150,000-mile power steering warranty.

No deaths or major injuries have been reported.

What To Do If You Are Part of the Vehicle Recall:

MINI will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the electro-hydraulic power steering system, replacing the components and wiring, as necessary, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin December 1, 2015. Owners may contact MINI customer service at 1-866-825-1525.
